European Left Alliance (ELA): a new left European political party to better resist, act and hope

In the wake of the 2024 European elections, which saw far-right parties dangerously progressing across the continent, seven major radical left forces gathered in August 2024 to create a new European political party.

La France insoumise (France), Vasemmistoliitto (Finland), Podemos (Spain), Enhedslisten (Denmark), Bloco de Esquerda (Portugal), Vänsterpartiet (Sweden), and Razem (Poland) have cooperated closely for years on the ground, and in the European Parliament. Since 2018, most current members of ELA already worked together as members’ of the “Now The People” coalition, which adopted a 10 points declaration for a Green Left Europe in February 2024 with other major left parties such as Die Linke (Germany), EH Bildu (Basque Country), Sinistra Italiana (Italy), and Dei Lenk (Luxembourg).

The creation of the Alliance is a new step in the building of a European left coalition dedicated to learning and acting more efficiently against capitalism and the far-right. Members of the Alliance aspire to foster and participate in mass social mobilisations, form governments, change peoples’ lives, and shape a future of peace and solidarity. The European Left Alliance is founded upon a joint political declaration enacting the political priorities of the coalition, which preamble reads as follows:

“We believe that Europe needs a strong, combative left that will not compromise its values and will fight for an alternative project. A project for economic and social justice, in which everyone contributes according to their income and wealth is redistributed. A project to really combat global warming and its serious consequences, and to protect nature while supporting workers in the transition. A project where austerity rules no longer prevent investment in the ecological transition and in public services, which must be protected from competition and market logic. A project where feminism and the fight for equality and against patriarchy are transversal and present in all spheres of society. A project where democracy is deepened, where the right of all peoples to self-determination is respected, where our rights and freedoms prevail, and where minorities and refugees acquire new ones. A peace project that guarantees the respect for international law and the absence of double standards.

We will do our utmost to create a better future for all, working alongside trade unions, NGOs, social movements and civil society organizations. Together, we will build a Europe that defends the interests of the many, not the few.”
