Press release – ELA public event on 5 June in Milan

There is a new force in Europe, the European Left Alliance (ELA),  which brings together 11 left-wing parties from across the continent to win elections, govern, and create a fairer and more just future for the people and the planet.

And there is no fairer future without taxing the wealthy, the profits of multinationals, and large fortunes.

For this reason, the European Left Alliance is organising the public event “Tax the Rich” on 5 June in Milan, at Santeria (Viale Toscana 31) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, in the framework of the ELA General Assembly. Political leaders and prominent economists from across Europe will take part, with a shared message: the time has come to tax the rich and redistribute wealth.

We can no longer delay effective action to redistribute wealth: taxing the rich, the profits of multinationals, and large fortunes, at a time when the growing concentration of power and capital is putting democracy at risk. Inequalities are not a natural fact, but the result of political choices, which is why we want to discuss concrete proposals to be shared at the European level.

The event will feature, among others: MEP Catarina Martins (co-president of the European Left Alliance), MEP Manon Aubry (co-president of the Left Group in the European Parliament and MEP for La France insoumise), MP Nicola Fratoianni (Chair, Sinistra Italiana), MP Elisabetta Piccolotti (Sinistra Italiana), MEP Irene Montero (Podemos, Spain), MP Minja Koskela, (Chair, Vasemmistoliitto, Finland), José Manuel Pureza (National Coordinator, Bloco de Esquerda, Portugal), Quentin Parrinello (policy director at the International Tax Observatory), Mikhail Maslennikov (Oxfam), economist Emiliano Brancaccio, and many others from  Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, the Basque Country, Germany, Denmark, and Slovenia and Ireland.

“Inflation has drastically increased poverty across Europe, and this is largely due to the profits made by large corporations. The solution is clear: tax the rich and redistribute wealth to build better democracies and improve the lives of citizens” – Catarina Martins, MEP and co-president of the European Left Alliance.

“There is no left-wing proposal that does not put the issue of inequality at its centre. One of the greatest injustices of our time is the fact that workers contribute to collective well-being through their taxes in a far more significant way than the ultra-wealthy and large corporations. It is time to say enough” – Nicola Fratoianni, Chair, Sinistra Italiana.
